LONDON, April 16 (Xinhua) -- Britain's leading museums , galleries and cultural charities have sparked a nationwide craze to mark the centenary of the First World War (WWI), seeking to help communities and travelers in the country recapture wartime memories through state-of-the-art technologies.
The Imperial War Museums (IWM), established in 1917 when WWI was still going on, is partnering with the British government to commemorate the landmark anniversary of the outbreak of WWI, according to VisitEngland, a national tourist board in Britain.
From April, the IWM will coordinate its five branches across the country to host a wide range of new exhibitions, displays and cultural events, with more than 500 exhibitions and 1 ,500 events scheduled between 2014 and 2018.
From July 19, the museum's flagship branch IWM London is to unveil its new permanent WWI Galleries where visitors can discover the story of war and its global impact through the lives of those who experienced it at the time on both the frontline and the home front across Britain and its expire, the IWM said Wednesday.
Featuring a variety of interactive digital displays, the permanent galleries will showcase over 1,300 objects, including weapons, uniforms, diaries, letters , souvenirs, military posters and ship models in its WWI collections.
"These galleries will allow audiences old and young to explore the First World War in great depth. They will experience the sights, smells and sounds of the recreated trench, see what life was like at the front," said Diane Lees, director general of IWM.
The museum also encourages visitors to explore some of the harsh realities of war through its specially designed "atmospheric reflection areas" and "sound collections," according to the IWM.
IWM London, temporally closed until July 19, is undergoing a 40-million-pound (67.2-million-U.S. dollars) redevelopment , which includes the building of new WWI galleries and a new atrium with support from the British Department of Culture, Media, and Sport and many other philanthropic donations.
IWM North, based in Manchester, has orchestrated "From Street to Trench: A War That Shaped a Region," the largest exhibition exploring the Northwest of England, which was a major military recruitment center in Britain during WWI.
The exhibition, held from April 5 to May 31, includes previously unpublished stories of soldiers , pilots and sailors who fought in different parts of the world, aiming to reveal the region's specific role in a global conflict.
"One hundred years on, the objects we display highlight the poignancy and courage of people who shaped and were shaped by this first global conflict. Even a century later there are stories untold, experiences undiscovered and tales that will surprise," said Graham Boxer, director of IWM North.
The National Trust, a British conservation charity, is poised to commemorate the WWI centenary at a number of its heritage properties over the coming years.
The charity has transformed Dunham Massey, a National Trust property in Cheshire of northwestern England , back into the Stamford Military Hospital, which served as a sanctuary for nearly 300 injured soldiers brought back from the frontline for treatment during WWI, the charity said.
Operation tables, beds, staircases, the main ward and the solders' recreation room were all restored to reflect their original looks in 1917, with hidden stereo systems simulating the soldiers' groans, jokes and their conversations with the nurses, Xinhua observed during a field trip to the hospital.
Meanwhile , Historic Royal Palaces, an independent charity managing Britain's unoccupied royal palaces, is set to mark the centenary of the start of WWI through a major art installation, planning to display a total of 888,246 ceramic poppies in memory of British and colonial fatalities during the war at the Tower of London on August 5, VisitEngland said.
Tate Modern, one of the largest modern art galleries in the world, is slated to launch its "100 Years Later: Conflict, Time , Photography" show in November this year, focusing on the relationship between photography and the conflicts.
"These experiences, from new exhibitions in our leading museums and galleries to specially commissioned pieces of theatre and performance, will allow visitors and communities to mark the centenary in a way that is meaningful to them," said James Berresford, chief executive of VisitEngland.
